The Nation : Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Monday vowed to scrap the electronic lottery vending project, saying he would assign a special committee to study how to best compensate the private firm contracted to operate the project.
Abhisit said there should be other ways to compensate the firm without having to pay money.
The prime minister said he had learnt from a research that the selling two- and three-digit lottery would not solve the problem of underground lottery but would instead increase the number of lottery buyers.
He said it would be illogical to solve the social vice of underground lottery by legalising it.
Abhisit said if the government used this logic to deal with the underground lottery, it would have to use the same logic with other social vices, including narcotics abusing.
