Be Killed in Fire at Russian Nightclub

The New York Times : MOSCOW — A fire, apparently caused by an indoor pyrotechnical display, roared through a crowded nightclub in a central Russian city on Friday night, killing about 90 people and wounding scores of others, the local news media reported.

The authorities in the city, Perm, which is 700 miles northeast of Moscow, said many of the people died from smoke inhalation and a stampede that occurred after the display was detonated at 11:15 p.m., according to RIA Novosti, the state news agency.

Russian state television showed photos of bodies piled up in front of the club, the Lame Horse. More than 200 people were inside at the time of the fire, attending a party celebrating the club’s eighth anniversary, according to news reports. Most of those in attendance were young workers at the club, their friends and relatives.

Russia has been on edge after a bombing of a luxury train last week that killed 26 people. With that in mind, soon after news of the large death toll in Perm circulated early Saturday morning, law enforcement officials were quick to emphasize that terrorism was not suspected.

"The accident was due to a violation of instructions when launching fireworks," Vladimir Markin, an official at the prosecutor general’s investigation committee, told the Interfax news agency.

Perm, with a population of roughly one million, is one of Russia’s largest cities.

The fire recalled a similar disaster in Rhode Island in 2003, when a rock band’s pyrotechnics set off a blaze that killed 100 people.

High death tolls in fires in Russia are not rare. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country has been plagued by such disasters, often caused by rampant violation of safety codes, aging building and electrical systems, and poor firefighting equipment.

Early Saturday morning, Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin’s office said he had established a panel to investigate the cause of the fire and had sent two airplanes to Perm to transport people with serious burns to hospitals, RIA Novosti said.

At least 96 dead in nightclub blast

Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- An explosion late Friday at a nightclub in central Russia killed at least 96 people and injured at least 139 others, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said.

However, the precise numbers were not immediately clear -- local law enforcement officials in the city of Perm, 900 miles east of Moscow, put the number of dead at 99, according to Interfax.

The preliminary theory behind the blast is "unsanctioned use of pyrotechnical devices," the ministry said.

"The breach of technology while setting off a firework was the cause of the accident," said Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee of the Russian Prosecutor's Office. "It was not a terrorist act," he told Russian news agencies.

Burns and smoke inhalation caused the deaths, Markin said, adding that authorities have opened a criminal investigation.

Russian news media said the blast occurred as a party was in full swing at The Lame Horse nightclub, which was celebrating its eighth year in business.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent a number of high government officials to Perm to handle the consequences of the accident, organize medical assistance to survivors and investigate the event.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin dispatched from Moscow two planes equipped to carry people with extensive burns.

The explosion occurred a week after a luxury express train from Moscow to St. Petersburg derailed, killing 26 people and injuring than 100 others. Russia's Federal Security Service blamed the incident on an improvised explosive device that had been placed beneath the tracks by unknown bombers. It was the most lethal terrorist act outside of Russia's troubled North Caucasus region since 2004.

Fireworks blast in Russian nightclub

ฺBBC News : At least 101 people have died following an explosion at a nightclub in the Russian city of Perm, 1,400km (870 miles) east of Moscow.

Officials said fireworks caused the blast and that most victims had died from smoke inhalation.

More than 140 people were reported injured in the accident, which happened at 2315 local time (1815 GMT).

The Lame Horse nightclub had been celebrating its eighth anniversary, emergency services said.

Regional public security minister Igor Orlov told Itar-Tass news agency: "There were fireworks launched at the scene, and one hit the plastic ceiling, setting all ablaze. People panicked and succumbed to burns, general crush and gas poisoning."

Russian state-run TV channel Vesti-24 showed bodies piled in the street outside the club.

Perm has a population of 1.2 million and is the sixth largest city in Russia.

Planes despatched

A spokesman for the prosecutor-general's main investigative unit told Itar-Tass that it was not a terrorist attack.

"We are talking about a failure to observe fire regulations," he said.

He added that a criminal investigation into a violation of the rules had been opened.

Regional officials said that fireworks used at the party were too big for closed premises and were intended for outdoor use.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, said two planes equipped to transport people with serious burns were being sent to Perm.

Government officials were also leaving for the city, he said.

The BBC's Tom Esslemont, in Moscow, says Russia has a very poor fire safety record with hundreds of people dying in similar incidents every year.

Fire in Nightclub Kills at Least 101

ABC News : PERM, Russia (Reuters) - At least 101 people were killed and 140 injured on Friday when hundreds of people stampeded out of a packed Russian nightclub after fireworks sparked a blaze, the Emergencies Ministry said.

Clubbers rushed for the doors of the Lame Horse nightclub in the center of Perm, a city of 1.2 million near the Ural mountains, after a firework show went disastrously wrong at about 11:15 p.m. (2015 GMT).

"The number of dead is 101 people, 140 people are receiving medical help ... 85 are seriously injured," Interfax quoted a local health official as saying.

A Reuters witness said dozens of charred bodies were piled on the pavement outside the club as medics moved the injured into ambulances. Blood-covered women in evening clothes lay on stretchers as scores of policemen swarmed around.
The fire follows a train bombing last Friday which killed 26 and injured more than 100 on a train traveling between Moscow and St Petersburg, for which Chechen Islamist militants claimed responsibility.

That blast stoked fears that Russia could face a nationwide bombing campaign, but Russian officials played down any links between the train attack and Friday's nightclub disaster.

"We are not talking about a terrorist attack," Oleg Chirkunov, the governor of Perm region, 1,150 km (720 miles) east of Moscow, told Vesti-24.

Detectives said they did not suspect a bomb attack.

"A firework blast sparked a blaze," a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Ministry said, but declined to give further details.

Witnesses quoted by local media said a stray firework sparked a fire during a stage show at the 500 square meter (5400 square ft) club, prompting panic as hundreds of clubbers rushed for the exits.

"I've just spoken to a friend who was there," said a posting on popular forum www.teron.ru, which serves the Perm region.

"He says there was no blast, everything flared up from the fireworks. Many people were cut off from the exit and suffocated as a result," the posting said.
